Florida Parks in the 21st Century 2008
The Florida Recreation and Park Association, The Trust for Public Land, The Florida League of Cities, and The Florida Association of Counties released December 6, 2007, the 2008 update of the Florida's Parks in the 21st Century (released December 2007)(pdf 721KB) needs assessment document. The report documents over $10 billion in need for local government parks and recreation needs. The number is higher than the $9 billion released in last year's report. Interestingly, the total number of acres needed decreased in this year's report, a factor due to local government not being able to meet levels of service on larger acreage dues to staff reductions as a result of property tax adjustments made in the 2007 legislative sessions. Local government are carefully weighing their ability to purchase additional land parcels in the very lean budget years ahead. As state agencies also weigh their ability to fund land acquisition, there is even more of a need created for funding through the Florida Forever program and an even more urgent need for the establishment of a successor program to the monumental, nationally recognized Florida Forever program.
Florida Parks in the 21st Century - A Sound Investment for a Growing State
The Florida Recreation and Park Association, The Trust for Public Land, and The Florida League of Cities joined forces to assess local government need for land acquisition, renovation restoration dollars, and new facility need dollars. The report (updated 2/26/07)(pdf 667KB) documents over $9 billion current day need. The report (initial release January 2006, updated release February 2007) summarizes the statewide need as well as need by region.
FRPA Appears on National Public Radio
As a participant in the Florida Forever Coalition, FRPA has joined forces with 15 organizations in order to craft the Florida Forever successor program. The Coalition is asking for a ten year program funding $1 billion per year. On October 20, 2006, three members of the Coalition (including FRPA Executive Director Eleanor Warmack) appeared on National Public Radio to discuss the Coalition's position.
