2013 Conference Service Project Announced
It is a proven fact that the more types of reading materials there are in a home, the higher children are in reading proficiency. Today, more than 20% of adults in the United States read at or below a
fifth-grade level and a child who grows up in a home with at least one illiterate parent is twice as likely to be illiterate. One of the most basic issues of literacy, both childhood and adult, is ensuring the availability of books to families in need.
Throughout 2013, FPRA will be collecting books, for all age groups, at Region Meetings and at Annual Conference. Just bring your gently used or new books to any FRPA function. Books collected in your Region will be distributed to local organizations such as homeless shelters, migrant worker foundations, community centers and other agencies in need.
FRPA will be tracking each Region’s collections throughout the year and at Conference. Region points will be awarded for the largest number of books received! It only takes one person and one book to make a difference. Remember, Be like B.W.! Give the gift of literacy and worm your way into someone’s heart.
