FRPA Announces Learning Journey with Ian Hill

LEADING THE HEART OF THE COMMUNITY IN TIMES OF CHANGE
with Ian Hill, North America's leading advocate for those in the parks, recreation and community services field

The parks, recreation and community service sector is both figuratively and literally the heart of any community.  It pumps life-giving blood throughout the community, touching in a meaningful way, every citizen.  In these increasingly complex and challenging times, those in the profession must be able to lead like never before.  Designed specifically for individuals in this critical sector, this year long professional journey will remind participants why we do what we do.  Identifying leading edge collaborative strategies and proven concepts for building community capacity, both of which are needed to take on the challenges of today, will be discussed between live sessions.

Ian Hill, nationally known speaker and motivator, will lead participants through a series of live streaming video sessions that will provide participants with a tool to "lead the heart of your community in times of change".  Sessions will be offered in November, December, February, April, May, September.  In the outlying months, you will have access to continued on-line dialogue with other participants to maximize your information exchange and learning assets.

The final session will be provided at the 2010 FRPA Annual Conference and will be a culmination of the year's journey.  If you aren't there, you will still be able to tune in via live streaming video.

Here is a brief introduction to Ian.

How do you become your best advocate, creating an “attitudinal” shift of how your staff see themselves; how the public sees your agency; and how you can position yourself and your agency to thrive in tumultuous times?  The best in our profession have mastered the challenges of adapting, overcoming, and re-creating themselves and their organizations in order to thrive in change.  Are you ready?

Position Statement
As the needs of communities change and the dynamics and demands of public recreation and parks programs increase, there must be a corresponding adjustment in how those in the profession operate their departments. Whether interacting with the public, mobilizing community resources, or going about their essential work of community building like only they are positioned to do, the recreation, parks and quality of life practitioner must be at their best so they can fulfill their unique role in building strong sustainable communities.

Needs Identification
Cleary the resources to develop, training and equip our people and move them to their full potential are not available today. We have systems in place to clean and maintain our facilities, register participants for our programs and groom our parks, but do we have systems in place to develop people?

  • Act as a platform for a national “dynamic exchange” of information that we allow for the sharing of leading edge practices, ideas and concepts, thereby providing the opportunity for exponential improvement in departments and communities across the country.
