More than 500,000 people call its 16 municipalities and unincorporated areas “home.” Brevard County is a home rule charter county, organized and operated under a commission/manager form of government. The five County Commissioners are elected by district and provide policy direction. Brevard County’s FY 2009/2010 adopted operating budget totals $1,093,543,028.

The Parks and Recreation Department is currently comprised of more than 420 permanent employees and approximately 350 temporary and seasonal positions. The department’s FY 2009/2010 operating budget is $152 million. Multiple voter approved referendums provided for enhancement of recreation venues and the protection, maintenance and use of environmentally sensitive lands. Recreation venues include more than 108 parks, 12 school athletic facilities, 15 community and cultural centers, 6 nature centers, 3 campgrounds, 3 golf courses, a variety of boat ramps, beach access sites and 17,000 acres of environmentally endangered lands sanctuaries and conservation areas.
